Diarrhea related deaths are
most commonly caused by dehydration produced by acute water diarrhea.
Approximately one third of diarrhea deaths, however are due to persistent
diarrhea (of 14 or more days in duration). Another 10 percent of diarrhea
related deaths are due to dysentery, which is characterized by the passage of
semi-solid or liquid stools with blood. However, a diarreahoeal patient should
be immediately taken care of if watery stool continues for more than thrice in
24 hours.
