CEMEX Cement (Bangladesh) Limited has contributed over $28,000 for the construction of the clinic. In a great display of partnership, the Chairman of CRC, the implementing NGO, has donated the land for this purpose only.

Alhaj Dr. Mozammel Hossain, MP, laid the foundation stone at a function on February 8, 2010, as chief guest.  Jim Griffin, Project Director, SSFP, Chemonics International and Juan Carlos Negrette, Chief of Party of SSFP were special guests on the occasion. He stressed the importance of safe deliveries at the community level and the need to have such a clinic as Shurjer Hashi. Local guests commented that they were excited and happy about this initiative and hoped that it will bring improved health services to the community.

In mid November 2007 when cyclone SIDR hit Bangladesh , and caused huge damage and loss of life, CEMEX workers around the globe felt compelled to stand in solidarity with the cyclone affected and decided to contribute from their own savings to help the victims overcome the consequence of this terrible natural disaster.

The existing clinic is now located in a wooden structure with a tin roof, which was partly damaged during SIDR. To continue providing quality services to this community, it is necessary to have a sturdier clinic building. After completion of the construction work, the clinic will move to the new cement and brick structure which can better withstand a cyclone.

The event ended by tree plantation at the new land of the clinic by the guests.

Smiling Sun clinics provide polio vaccines to 1.6 million children

Smiling Sun clinics vaccinated about 1.64 million children with Oral Polio Vaccine across its network on the 18th National Immunization Day (NID). This coverage is 7.45% of the total children vaccinated in Bangladesh on this NID. The quality of vaccination assessed through the Independent Observers Checklist was found to be of high quality.  The 18th NID was observed on January 10, 2010 by providing two drops of polio vaccine to more than 22 million children under the age of five in an effort to maintain the polio-free status of Bangladesh .

In addition to polio drops, all children aged 12-59 months received one vitamin A capsule and children aged between 24 and 59 months got one de-worming tablet.

Dr. Duangvadee Sungkhobol, World Health Representative to Bangladesh , praises the Smiling Sun activities while providing polio drops to children in SS Naodapara Clinic in Rajshahi.

Bangladesh has successfully maintained polio free status since November, 2006. Though no polio case was detected in the country for the last three years, it is very important for Bangladesh to conduct a high quality NID with a very high coverage to avert the risk of importation of polio virus from neighboring India which is a polio-endemic country.

During February 14-28 this year Measles Catch-up Campaign will be held across the country. Polio vaccines will also be provided on the first day of the campaign. Smiling Sun clinics will take part actively in the campaign and contribute effectively to make the campaign a success.
